Medical terminology

I went to a training day today aimed at NHS paraprofessionals working in libraries. One of the sessions was on medical terminology. Apparently medical words are mostly based on Greek and Latin and consist of a prefix, a root or two, a suffix and some conjoining vowels to sew them all together. Hence in the word 'pericardiology' 'cardi' is the root, meaning the heart, 'peri' is the prefix, meaning around or in the region of and 'logy' is the study of, the two words are joined with an 'o', hence 'pericardiology', the study of the heart and the region around it. We were given a list of lots of prefixes, roots and suffixes with their meanings. The session was taken by Christine Massey who is a trainer with AMSPAR.
