There are now some freely available reference manager programs that you can download to do a job rather like Endnote but free. Those I've come across are Papers and Mendeley. A blogger called Evo-Karma has reviewed them.
Papers allows you to organise pdf files and access references stored in the cloud and share them with collaborators.
The most commonly used reference software is Endnote, but you have to pay to buy this or belong to an institution that subscribes to the service. There is a video tutorial on the subject here
In my spare time I am writing a book on Regency history, which is an ideal opportunity to practice using reference software.Since my employers subscribe to Endnote I will be able to organise my references using Endnote if I use one of my organisation's computers that has the software.
