The slides of David Peacock's talk 'A strategic management and planning toolkit' given at an IFMH study day have been published on the Web: he starts off by describing the standard change management concepts that we all know and love (PEST and SWOT and moves on to one I hadn't heard of before: Porters five forces',(he refers to McKevitt 2000) and then he applies them to the British health libraries scene in a useful way. I learned the word 'singletonism' which is one of the new trends he identifies, and also the concepts of a 'public sector portfolio matrix'(including the concept of the 'golden fleece'- something that is a low priority and difficult to provide effectively and basically you're never going to get it- Peacock thinks the Ambulance service is one of these, which is very worrying.)Another tool he suggests is a 'Maslin multidimentional matrix.'IFMH stands for Information for the Management of Healthcare by the way. Sigh. So many concepts to remember!
