Unsupported versions of Mcaffee antivirus software

We had a trojan on some of our office computers today and the IT office granted us all memory stick amnestys, which is to say they availed themselves of all the memory sticks in sight and promised to return them the next day.Memory sticks are a prime suspect in such cases, apparently.

Although we had been using Mcaffee version 8.5 and running the usual automatic updates Mcaffee only supports its current and previous version and the current version that the University are pushing is 8.7. I had wrongly been told before that as long as you keep running updates the version did not matter.

Your computer may not send you any warning messages that the anti-virus is not performing and you have to look at the shield at the bottom of the screen to notice whether or not there is a problem. This sounds fairly obvious but many of us had not noticed that our antivirus software was out of date.

When a trojan arrived on my home laptop my 8.5 still detected and destroyed it, and the software still happily scans etc. so it must still be of some use I guess, but I shall take the computer into work and put version 8.7 on ASAP.
