Copyright wars

Apparently Google's lawyer William Patry has brought out a book on copyright called
"Moral Panics and the Copyright Wars" in which he argues that copyright concerns not private property but a social relationship and those who make exaggerated claims of copyright theft are encouraging a moral panic.
I have linked above to Barbara Fister's review of the book.
Copyright and the Google Settlement is certainly the issue of the moment. A recent article in D-Lib magazine by Brian Lavoie and Lorcan Dempsey pointed out that current laws and Google related debates involve different treatment for in-print vs. out of print books whereas in fact with many books now becoming print on demand this distinction is becoming blurred.
The Google settlement does not cover Europe and The National Library of France are considering spending 1.1 Billion on their own digitization project which may proceed in partnership with Google.
