RDA implementation date set for March 2013 vs Blueberry muffins

A date has finally been announced for the implementation of RDA, resource description and Access, (see Wikipedia) a new standard for cataloguing materials (see my earlier Blog on the subject: RDA in the wild.)

The Library of Congress have announced that RDA would be officially implemented on March 31, 2013. This date is somewhat nebulous since some RDA records are already being produced and circulated, however the future date represents a time when all relevent staff will be suitably trained and when adapted procedures will be in place. Presumably British Library and local library announcements will follow, describing how this will affect their cataloguing processes.

Be assured that in the exciting world of cataloguing this is a BIG EVENT. It is probably the most important event in my ten years of cataloguing experience. The world of cataloguing does not get very much more exciting than this [!] However in the grand scale of things at my local library it does not compare in any way with the excitement in our midst when the Reader Services librarian brings in a new selection of blueberry muffins.
