Solving some NHS Evidence database log-in problems

Users in our library sometimes have problems logging into NHS Evidence resources when logging into OpenAthens resources using a computer which belongs to a non-NHS institution.

I have just been shown how to get around this problem.

The problem  further explained: Our library computers are University computers. Our users are often NHS users. It's OK if you want to access a University resource: users using these computers are taken straight into the full text of any electronic resources to which the library subscribes without having to log in any access passwords at that point. This is done by the resource providers knowing the IP range of the University's computer and providing full access to the University's resources to any computer whose IP address falls within that range.

It's not OK if you are an NHS user and want to access a resource that the University does not subscribe to, even if you are entitled to access through Athens. When a resource provider's program looks at your University computer it is convinced that you are a university user. In short, conflicting Institutional access rights causes confusion.

The solution: After checking on the NHSEvidence website to see if you have access to the resource, (for instance: Clinical Medicine) and checking the date and  noting the journal provider (e.g. Proquest Hospital Collection), go to the 'My Account' section, follow the link to 'visit your MyAthens page' and find the database as listed on your 'MyAthens' page. Find the database or journal provider (Proquest New Platform) in the list and follow the link to access the resource that way.

Warning: sometimes the database has a different name in the MyAthens page to the way it is listed on NHSEvidence, for instance, if a journal (say Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology) is listed on NHSEvidence as 'Medline full text' you will need to notice that, if you highlight the word 'Medline full text' in the NHSEvidence record a pop up box on the bottom left corner mentions EBSCO, so you know you have to look at the EBSCO link on the MyAthens page.

Clear as Mud isn't it?
