I am doing some fundraising research for a local organisation and I've reached the point where I need to start thinking about what formats we're going to use to record my research. In a pleasingly short slideshare presentation: Spreadsheet or Database: That is the question?, Nikki Massaro Kauffman answers all my questions: a spreadsheet is for less that 2000 records if you don't mind possible duplication and you're not going to want to manipulate them lots of different queries and reports [and in 'live' ways, such as linking user records to product records or whatever too I guess]. At the moment I'm only drawing up information on organisations, so that sounds like a spreadsheet to me. Moreover, Nikki happily informs us that you can easily export either format into the other.
