ORCID and other author identifiers

A colleague recently told me about ORCID, a scheme for giving authors their own unique personal identifiers so that all their research can be linked to one identifier.

Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory explains: "Because multiple researchers in the same or different fields may have the same first and last names, there is an author ambiguity problem within the scholarly research community. To circumvent this problem, the idea has been raised of assigning each researcher a "unique author identifier."

Aha- but isn't that their library of congress authorised author record? I hear you cry. Apparently not. Presumably because these have only traditionally been issued to the authors of books, and not articles. Now ORCID and Researcherid help supply this service

You can see my ORCID record here .
